Toxin Buildup in the Blood (Uremia)

Uremia occurs when waste products such as urea and creatinine accumulate in the bloodstream. Symptoms include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, appetite loss, itchy skin, confusion, and in severe cases, coma.

Diagnosis and treatment:

Diagnosis is made via blood tests showing elevated urea and creatinine levels, and reduced glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Treatment involves dialysis (hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or CRRT) to remove toxins and improve the patient’s condition.

Consequences if untreated:

If left untreated, uremia can lead to multi-organ damage, encephalopathy, severe metabolic imbalance, and potentially death.
