Hemodialysis

About

Hemodialysis is a life-saving treatment used when the kidneys can no longer effectively filter waste and excess fluids from the bloodstream. The process involves drawing blood out of the body, cleaning it through a dialyzer, and returning it back to circulation. It's typically performed three times a week in specialized centers. In Croatia, hemodialysis is available at certified clinics with high safety and hygiene standards, supported by trained nephrology teams.

Candidate

Patients with end-stage renal disease, acute kidney injury, or those who are not suitable for peritoneal dialysis may be candidates. A stable cardiovascular condition and the presence of a functional vascular access (like a fistula) are required.

Preparation

Patients will need vascular access placement (either a fistula or central line), lab testing, and medical consultation prior to treatment. International patients are advised to bring their latest nephrology reports and dialysis prescriptions.

Treatment

Each session lasts about 4 hours. During this time, patients are seated or reclining, while blood is filtered through the machine. The treatment is not painful and is monitored by medical professionals.

Result

Toxin levels decrease, fluid balance is restored, and patients often report increased energy and appetite after sessions.

Precautions

Potential complications include low blood pressure, fatigue after treatment, and strict dietary and fluid restrictions.
