About
Cardiovascular Health Laboratory Panel is a group of blood tests designed to assess lipid metabolism, atherogenic lipoproteins, homocysteine and a selected marker associated with cardiac strain. The panel includes total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, apolipoprotein A, apolipoprotein B, homocysteine, lipoprotein(a) and proBNP.
The results can provide a more detailed view than a standard cholesterol test alone. They may support cardiovascular risk assessment, preventive evaluation and follow-up of previously abnormal lipid findings. However, the panel evaluates only part of cardiometabolic and cardiovascular risk. What the panel measures
- Total, HDL and LDL cholesterol: provide core information about cholesterol distribution and lipid-related cardiovascular risk.
- Triglycerides: measure another type of circulating fat that may be influenced by diet, alcohol intake, metabolic health and inherited factors.
- Apolipoprotein A: provides additional information about lipoproteins associated mainly with HDL particles.
- Apolipoprotein B: reflects the concentration of potentially atherogenic lipoprotein particles and can complement LDL cholesterol measurement.
- Lipoprotein(a): is a largely genetically influenced lipoprotein associated with cardiovascular risk. Its concentration is usually not adequately estimated from a standard lipid profile.
- Homocysteine: may be elevated for nutritional, genetic, kidney-related, medication-related or other reasons. It is interpreted as a nonspecific marker rather than an independent diagnosis.
- proBNP: is a natriuretic peptide marker that may contribute to the assessment of cardiac strain. Interpretation depends on symptoms, age, kidney function and the wider clinical picture.
When the panel may be considered
The panel may be useful for adults seeking a more detailed cardiovascular laboratory assessment, particularly when there is a family history of early cardiovascular disease, previously elevated cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, excess body weight, smoking, chronic kidney disease or another recognized cardiovascular risk factor. It may also be considered when a clinician recommends expanded lipid or lipoprotein testing.
People experiencing palpitations, rapid heartbeat and chest discomfort need to understand that blood tests cannot record the heart rhythm or determine the cause of chest pain.
