About

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) of the musculoskeletal system is a diagnostic technique used to visualize bones, joints, soft tissues, muscles, and tendons in the body. This procedure provides a detailed depiction of musculoskeletal structures, aiding in the diagnosis of issues such as injuries, degenerative changes, infections, tumors, or other conditions related to bones and muscles. MRI of the musculoskeletal system is often utilized to assess joint injuries, such as ligament or cartilage injuries, and to monitor progress during rehabilitation following injuries.

Candidate

You need this examination if your family doctor or specialist (orthopedist, traumatologist, physiatrist, sports medicine specialist or radiologist...) assesses that your symptoms are related to changes in the soft tissues of muscles or joints and the bone-joint system and that magnetic resonance is a diagnostic method that will give the most detailed answer about the causes of your illness.

Preparation

Bring all medical documentation related to the examination that is being performed and, possibly, before the examination, remove all metal objects from the body and wear clothes that will be easy for you to remove from the part of the body or joint that needs to be examined.

Treatment

It is mandatory to remove all metal objects from the body before entering the room where the MR device is located. The staff working on the device will lay you down on the device table in a position that depends on the musculoskeletal part of the body being examined. An additional small device, a coil, will be placed around the part of the body being examined. It serves to transmit and receive radio waves in and out of the body and ensures the quality of the obtained images. Sometimes, for a more detailed analysis and accurate diagnosis, it is necessary to use a special contrast agent that is applied through a vein in your arm (IV) or directly into the joint space (direct MR arthrography). During the examination, the staff operating the MR device will observe you through a window from the other side premises. A part of the body is recorded in different recording conditions, each of which can last from 2 to 15 minutes, and the entire scan can last over an hour.

F.A.Q.

What is an MRI of the musculoskeletal system?

An MRI of the musculoskeletal system is a diagnostic procedure that uses magnetic resonance imaging to obtain detailed images of bones, joints, muscles, and other parts of the musculoskeletal system.

Why is an MRI of the musculoskeletal system performed?

This procedure is typically conducted to diagnose issues such as bone injuries, ligament, tendon, or muscle problems, or other conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system.

How to prepare for an MRI of the musculoskeletal system?

Preparation may involve wearing clothing without metal parts, removing jewelry, and informing the doctor about any metal implants.

Is radiation during an MRI dangerous?

MRI does not use X-ray radiation but rather magnetic fields and radio waves. Exposure is usually low, but it is important to consult with the doctor about potential risks.

How long does the MRI of the musculoskeletal system procedure take?

The duration of the procedure can vary but typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the extent of the examination.

Can I eat before an MRI of the musculoskeletal system?

In most cases, there is no need for fasting before an MRI of the musculoskeletal system, but the doctor may provide specific guidelines.

What if I am pregnant? Can I undergo an MRI of the musculoskeletal system?

MRI during pregnancy is often avoided unless absolutely necessary. The decision will depend on the urgency and consultation with the doctor.

Are side effects common after an MRI of the musculoskeletal system?

Side effects are rare, but some individuals may experience mild discomfort or anxiety during the procedure.

How quickly can I get the results of an MRI of the musculoskeletal system?

Results are usually available within a few days, and the doctor will review and explain them to the patient.

Can I obtain a copy of the results of an MRI of the musculoskeletal system?
