About

MR fistulography is a diagnostic technique used to visualize fistulas in the body using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This technique enables the depiction of abnormal passages or connections between two cavities or between cavities and the body surface. MR fistulography is often used for diagnosing and evaluating various types of fistulas, including anal fistulas, intestinal fistulas, or other types of abnormal openings. This technique provides detailed images of fistulas, aiding physicians in establishing an accurate diagnosis and planning appropriate treatment.

Candidate

You need MR fistulography during surgical/proctological treatment of acute or chronic pain in the perineal region, the area around the groin, as well as evident acute or chronic inflammatory processes with leakage of purulent content around the groin. Some of these conditions carry a high risk for the patient's health, the possible development of extensive inflammatory changes with sepsis and other inflammatory conditions of the retroperitoneal soft tissues that can threaten the patient's life and should be diagnosed in time in order to carry out successful treatment.

Preparation

The day before the examination, it is necessary to take a cleansing agent in order to empty the intestines well, which allows for an unobstructed view of all the structures of the small pelvis and perineum. Come to the examination on an empty stomach.

Treatment

The search is pleasant and painless. Intravenous contrast agents are not administered during the examination. During the examination, the soft tissues of the perineal region, the area around the terminal colon and rectum, and the structures of the small pelvis are analyzed.

F.A.Q.

What is MR fistulography?

MR fistulography is a diagnostic procedure that uses magnetic resonance imaging to obtain detailed images of fistulas, abnormal passages between two organs or between an organ and the skin surface.

Why is MR fistulography performed?

This procedure is often used for diagnosing, monitoring, and planning the treatment of fistulas, as well as assessing surrounding tissues.

How to prepare for MR fistulography?

Preparation may involve informing the doctor about previous surgeries, allergies, or other health conditions. It may also be necessary to limit food or drink intake before the procedure.

Are contrast agents common during MR fistulography?

Contrast agents are often used to enhance the visualization of fistulas and surrounding structures during the procedure.

How long does the MR fistulography procedure take?

The duration of the procedure can vary but usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the specific requirements of the examination.

Are side effects common after MR fistulography?

Side effects are rare, but some patients may experience mild nausea, headache, or allergic reactions to the contrast material if used.

Can I eat before MR fistulography?

In some cases, it may be necessary to limit food or drink intake before the procedure. The doctor will provide specific guidelines.

How quickly can I get the results of MR fistulography?

Results are usually available after a few days, and the doctor will review and explain them to the patient.

Can I obtain a copy of the MR fistulography results?

Yes, in most cases, you can obtain a copy of the results to bring to your doctor.

What if I am pregnant? Can I undergo MR fistulography?

MR during pregnancy is usually avoided unless absolutely necessary. The decision should be made in consultation with the doctor.
