PRK Method

About

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is a type of refractive surgery used to correct vision problems like nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. Unlike LASIK, which involves creating a flap in the cornea, PRK involves directly reshaping the corneal surface.

Candidate

Candidates for PRK are typically individuals with mild to moderate nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism who are not suitable candidates for LASIK due to thin corneas, irregular corneal curvature, or other factors. Patients with large pupils, dry eyes, or certain medical conditions may also opt for PRK.

Preparation

Before PRK, patients undergo a comprehensive eye examination to evaluate their eye health and determine their suitability for the procedure. Contact lens wearers may need to stop wearing their lenses for a period before the surgery to allow the cornea to return to its natural shape.

Treatment

During PRK, the ophthalmologist removes the epithelium, the outer layer of the cornea, using either a special brush or a laser. A laser is then used to reshape the cornea based on pre-determined measurements obtained during the initial examination. After reshaping the cornea, a bandage contact lens is placed on the eye to protect it while the epithelium regenerates.

Result

The recovery process after PRK is typically longer compared to LASIK, with vision gradually improving over several days to weeks as the epithelium heals and the cornea stabilizes. Most patients experience significant improvement in vision after PRK, achieving clearer vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Precautions

Patients may experience discomfort, sensitivity to light, and blurry vision during the initial healing period, which usually lasts a few days to a week. It's essential for patients to follow their ophthalmologist's post-operative instructions carefully, which may include using prescribed eye drops, avoiding strenuous activities, and attending follow-up appointments to monitor progress and address any concerns.
