LASIK Method

About

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a popular type of refractive surgery used to correct vision problems like nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. It involves reshaping the cornea using a laser to improve the way light rays are focused onto the retina.

Candidate

Candidates for LASIK are typically individuals with stable vision who have refractive errors within a certain range, such as mild to moderate nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. Patients should have healthy eyes without significant abnormalities in the cornea or other eye structures.

Preparation

Before LASIK, patients undergo a comprehensive eye examination to evaluate their eye health and determine their suitability for the procedure. Contact lens wearers may need to stop wearing their lenses for a period before the surgery to allow the cornea to return to its natural shape.

Treatment

During LASIK, the surgeon creates a thin flap in the outer layer of the cornea using a specialized cutting tool or a femtosecond laser. The flap is then lifted to expose the underlying corneal tissue. A laser is used to reshape the cornea based on pre-determined measurements obtained during the initial examination. After reshaping the cornea, the flap is repositioned, and it adheres naturally without the need for stitches.

Result

Most patients experience significant improvement in vision immediately after LASIK, with many achieving 20/20 vision or better. The full extent of vision correction may take a few days to weeks to stabilize as the cornea heals and adjusts to its new shape.

Precautions

Patients may experience temporary side effects such as dry eyes, glare, halos, or fluctuations in vision during the initial healing period. It's important for patients to follow their surgeon's post-operative instructions carefully, which may include using prescribed eye drops, avoiding rubbing the eyes, and attending follow-up appointments to monitor progress and address any concerns.
