You should see a gastroenterologist when you have indigestion, pain in the upper abdomen, vomiting, changes in bowel function (altering of diarrhea and constipation) or bleeding.

It is necessary to bring previous medical documentation and to know the names of the medicines you take.

The gastroenterological exam consists of taking an anamnesis, talking about previous diseases and existing difficulties, examining the findings and a clinical examination. The examination includes diagnosis and treatment of problems of the digestive system (esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, liver, gall bladder and pancreas). The gastroenterological examination assesses the need for further gastroenterological diagnostic treatment based on laboratory findings and clinical examination. Such treatment may include gastroscopy, colonoscopy and ultrasound examination of the abdominal cavity performed in an outpatient setting or possibly more invasive diagnostic procedures performed in a hospital setting (liver biopsy, ERCP, etc.).
